Review: Castle of Illusion Starring Mickey Mouse HD (iPad)

Review by Matt S.

I would never have thought that the developers and publishers of this game would have thought to release it on a platform with virtual controls. As a remake of a early-era game, Castle of Illusion Starring Mickey Mouse HD is the kind of platformer that requires precision skill across small and often rickety areas. And for many that kind of platforming is a no-go without physical buttons.

But it works. It really works. Castle of Illusion is without a doubt the finest platformer available on the iPad, and the perfect experience to have sitting on your iPad for play on the go. It might not be the longest game, but for its price point, it's genuine quality.

Disney Infinity Toy Box on iOS; everyone (including Nintendo) should pay attention to this

Over the last couple of weeks Disney has released a few "companion apps" to its rather wonderful Disney Infinity console game.

The first of these was a little throwaway. Action! Was clearly designed for kids who have been dragged away on a trip and whose parents didn't want to spend money buying the woeful 3DS version of Disney Infinity. But the second app, released just a few days ago, is a text book case study in the kinds of second screen experiences that everyone (yes, you too, Nintendo), need to be working on for their own games.

Review: Kingdom Hearts 1.5 HD Remix (PS3)

Review by Matt S.

Kingdom Hearts 1.5 HD Remix was a good idea by Square Enix. This is a series that has become utterly incomprehensible for any player who hasn't kept up with each new release over the years, and so packaging three of the more critical stories together will help new players take those first steps into the universe as we wait for the eventual release of Kingdom Hearts 3.

Review: Disney Infinity (Wii U)

When it came time to head down to the local game store and pick up my copy of Disney Infinity, the only platform that made sense to me was the Nintendo Wii U. Not because the Gamepad is used in any special way (it isn't), but for the same reason that the same magic that made Disney such a special company when Walt was in charge is the magic that makes Nintendo games so compelling.

Disney Infinity is going mobile, too

Disney Infinity is one of the more interesting games on the way from the House of Mickey. It's a Skylanders clone in theory, where players will use physical miniatures of a range of Disney properties to summon characters into their console for play.
