A fond farewell to the last generation

Opinion by Nick H.

It's hard to believe the next generation of consoles is right around the corner. I suppose a fair point could be made that the Wii U actually kicked that generation, though many people felt it was more of a midway pit stop than a full on upgrade in technology. Am I excited to get my hands on the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One controllers? Absolutely - but there was a great deal to love about the Wii, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 as well.

Looking back at the the last generation; the highs and lows

Opinion by Lucy I.

The seventh gaming console generation began nearly eight years ago in 2005, but it’s finally come to the end of an era. It’s time for us to look back over the last generation of home consoles.

PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, Wii. Over the last eight years, thousands of these branded console heroes have made their way to households, with this generation being the busiest and most undeniably talked about generation in the history of video gaming.

Review: Magrunner Dark Pulse (PS3)

Review by Nick H.

The inspiration for Magrunner Dark Pulse is clearly Valve's incredibly popular Portal. Between the visuals and the sense of perspective (first person) and the puzzle-solving nature of Magrunner, the two games really do have a great deal in common.

Review: The Guided Fate Paradox (PS3)

Review by Matt S.

I love a good paradox. They're the brain twisters for the intelligent, and also philosophy that everyone can think about. Integrate a good paradox into a narrative and you'll effortlessly engage your reader or viewer as they ponder over the ideas and theories that you're throwing at them.

With that said I had no idea that Nippon Ichi would execute on the potential of the paradox so perfectly. The Guided Fate Paradox is surprising on so many levels. It's a relatively mature and restrained production from the folks best known for the insanity of Disgaea. It's the first roguelike RPG where I've cared more about the narrative than the actual dungeon hacking. It's the simplest looking but most attractive PlayStation 3 game ever made. Perhaps that's the great point that The Guided Fate Paradox makes; it itself is a development paradox.

Strider is looking very sharp so far

There has not been a lot of information about Strider released yet, but Capcom has shared out some new screens of this upcoming HD remake.

Screenshots of Drakengard 3's aerial combat

Drakengard 3 is one of the more anticipated titles around here lately, with its similarities to Nier appealing to several of us. Here we get to see Square Enix's upcoming title showing off some of the dragon-against-dragon airborne combat.

Screens of Dragon Ball Z's customisation options

There have been a lot of action and cinematic screenshots released by Namco Bandai for its upcoming Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Z title for the Xbox 360, PS4 and Vita. This is the first really good look I have seen of the character customisation screens however.

Review: Grand Theft Auto V (Xbox 360)

Review by Rexly P.

The last time players explored San Andreas was in 2004 with the release of Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas. Nine years later, we return to a redefined San Andreas consisting of the urban sprawl of Los Santos and the vast landscapes of Blaine County in Rockstar Games' latest release, Grand Theft Auto V.

Review: FIFA 14 (PS3)

Say what you want about EA, it makes great games. There’s just no other way to put it. NHL 14 and Tiger Woods PGA Tour 14 both excelled over previous entries, but now that FIFA 14 has run onto the field, all of those fingers that got pointed at EA for being the worst company in the world earlier this year (and the year before), well, if you’re one of the finger pointers, you can point that finger right back at yourself, because you're pretty silly.

Early screenshots of Kadokawa Games' Tactics RPG, Natural Doctrine

One of the upcoming PlayStation 4 games I am most excited for is Natural Doctrine by Kadokawa Games. It will be releasing in Japan (no outside territories listed yet, but I am crossing my fingers) on February 22nd, 2014.

Brutal Gamer News Wrap: Grand Theft Auto V edition

As if you didn't know, one of the biggest games of the year (if not the current console generation) is now out in the wild and playing on more than a few Xbox 360's and PS3's around the globe. We've got some cheats to help you through the massive campaign, the latest site update complete with extras and a look at GamesRadar's review.

Review: NHL 14 (PS3)

EA draws a lot of criticism for its core sports franchises primarily featuring minor tweaks and improvements, along with rosters updates each year, and to some degree it’s understandable. As you can see in our review, this year’s Madden title tackled itself right into this category. Yet, earlier this year EA Tiburon teed up with a host of improvements and modes in Tiger Woods PGA Tour 14: The Masters Historic Edition and now EA Canada has hit the ice in full force in NHL 14, delivering a virtual hockey experience that is the closest thing you’ll find to stepping into the rink for yourself.

Metal Gear Solid; focusing in on the boobs, yay or nay?

Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain garnered a lot of attention when it was first teased, and now the prologue Ground Zeroes is starting to draw quite a bit of attention as well - but the big question is, is it drawing attention for the right things?

The visuals look amazing, and the promise of 60 frames per second is obviously nice, but Kojima's recent comments that they wanted to make the upcoming character Quiet to be more erotic and sexy raised a few eyebrows.

Nothing about the whole "shooting the living bejeebus out of enemies" bit, of course. It's the sexiness that is a threat to our global morality.

Dark Souls II closed Beta looks to start taking PS3 applicants early next month

Namco Bandai Games recently revealed that it will be rolling out new streams of information daily on the Dark Souls II Facebook page, starting September 5th. This closed-beta will allow players to step into one of the most treacherous areas of the game and are stating that only the hardcore players need to apply, by calling it “one of the most challenging beta experiences ever offered on the Sony PlayStation 3 system.”

The full press release can be found below:

Hunting for more monsters - some screens and a trailer

Capcom has been releasing a lot of screens and information about its upcoming 3DS Monster Hunter title, but now we have a new trailer and a handful of additional screenshots for their PlayStation 3 and Wii U game.

Review: Dragon's Crown (Vita)

Nostalgic gamers that grew up in the 90s typically have fond memories of side-scrolling beat-em-ups. Gamers of all ages lined up on weekends to have their go at popular cabinets like The Simpsons, X-Men and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles - pockets filled to the bursting point with quarters. For many, these were the 'glory days' of the gaming industry. While recent titles like WayForward's Double Dragon Neon and The Behemoth's Castle Crashers have successfully brought this gameplay back to form in recent years, Atlus' upcoming Dragon's Crown release does just this and makes the retro style of gameplay feel fresh once again.

Ready to battle it out? Dragon Ball Z thinks so

We've got over a dozen screenshots of the upcoming Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Z game from ArtDink and Namco Bandai.

Review: Stealth Inc: A Clone in the Dark (PS3)

Stealth Inc: A Clone in the Dark sneaks its way onto the PlayStation Network and brings its unique mix of puzzle/platforming and stealth-based action onto both the PS3 and the Vita, packing the much beloved cross-buy and cross-save features right along with it.

This is a game that stands proudly on its heritage and places itself right alongside the many other great indie titles that call Sony’s network “home”.

Review: Mamorukun Curse (PS3)

Just as the PlayStation 3 tends to snatch up JRPGs, the Xbox 360 has been the home of the bullet-hell shooter this generation. With that in mind, it’s remarkable that the former mouthful known in Japan as Mamoru-kun wa Norowarete Shimatta!: Meikai Katsugeki Wide Han was able to make it to the PS3, let alone see a localised release elsewhere with its otaku charm intact. Thankfully, it has been rechristened as the decidedly less verbose (albeit still inelegantly titled) Mamorukun Curse.
