Review: Pokémon X (3DS)

For all its critical and sales successes, the Pokémon franchise has been lambasted by an increasingly vocal minority for reusing the same formula over and over again. Enter Pokémon X (and Y) for the 3DS, arguably the most ambitious title the main series has seen in the last decade. While it doesn’t particularly reinvent the series, it lays tremendous groundwork for doing so and offers a familiar yet original experience along the way.

A quick peek at more Pokemon evolutions

The upcoming Pokemon X & Y will no doubt be a hit, and Nintendo cleared up a few questions in some recent announcements. First, players will get a starter Pokemon from one of their NPC friends: Froakie, Fennekin or Chespin. They will also get another one from Professor Sycamore: Squirtle, Charmander or Bulbasaur.

Pokemon games are popular. Who knew?

Over the weekend at a game show in Tokyo, The Pokemon Company released some pretty interesting statistics. Pokemon Black/White sold 15.42 million copies as of March 31 of this year, and Pokemon Black 2/White 2 moved 7.81 million copies. In total, 172 million Pokemon games have been sold worldwide. That is a lot of critter collecting.

Pokemon has proven to be one of Nintendo's most endearing franchises over the years, with fans of all ages enjoying the combination of RPG elements with critter collection. Game Freak will be releasing Pokemon X and Y for the Nintendo 3DS in North America, Europe and Japan on October 12, 2013.
