Review: Ys: Memories of Celceta (Vita)

A surprising number of franchises have been able to achieve the 25th anniversary milestone considering the relative youth of the games industry. However, much fewer IPs have histories as rich and remarkable as Ys. Nihon Falcom hasn’t been shy about making complete visual and mechanical overhauls, outsourcing titles to other developers, or bringing the series to obscure platforms. It’s extraordinary that such a prolific property can maintain its quality despite that.

Mighty No. 9 Kickstarter rakes in over $4M, releasing on eight platforms

Comcept’s upcoming Mighty No. 9 seems to be living up to its title already, at least monetarily. Headlined by Keiji Inafune of Mega Man fame, the 2D platformer amassed $4,031,428 between over 67,000 backers and hit all of its announced stretch goals in the process.

I'm often intrigued by games that try to offer more than just an enjoyable experience. When something comes along that has solid gameplay, but also brings with it a deep set of undertones, it makes the venture into the game much more worthwhile.

Review: The HD Adventures of Rotating Octopus Character (Vita)

The HD Adventures of Rotating Octopus Character, a remastered version of the PS Mini title, still provides the same fun and colourful atmosphere on the Vita. Players control an orange octopus in an effort to retrieve all of its offspring scattered throughout the world. Birds, bulldogs and projectile-throwing hats are only some of the things that Rotating Octopus Character needs to avoid to stay alive.

Review: Floating Cloud God Saves the Pilgrims in HD (Vita)

Floating Cloud God Saves the Pilgrims was originally a PS Mini title for the PSP, and one that was held in high acclaim. It was a unique horizontal shooter in the same vein as The Game Atelier’s Flying Hamster, but wasn't quite as much fun as, in my view, the controls were less than ideal. Dakko Dakko has brought the title back once again as a native Vita title in HD, and the Vita’s second analogue stick rectifies those control issues in the process.

Nostalgic gamers that grew up in the 90s typically have fond memories of side-scrolling beat-em-ups. Gamers of all ages lined up on weekends to have their go at popular cabinets like The Simpsons, X-Men and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles - pockets filled to the bursting point with quarters. For many, these were the 'glory days' of the gaming industry. While recent titles like WayForward's Double Dragon Neon and The Behemoth's Castle Crashers have successfully brought this gameplay back to form in recent years, Atlus' upcoming Dragon's Crown release does just this and makes the retro style of gameplay feel fresh once again.

Review: Stealth Inc: A Clone in the Dark (PS3)

Stealth Inc: A Clone in the Dark sneaks its way onto the PlayStation Network and brings its unique mix of puzzle/platforming and stealth-based action onto both the PS3 and the Vita, packing the much beloved cross-buy and cross-save features right along with it.

This is a game that stands proudly on its heritage and places itself right alongside the many other great indie titles that call Sony’s network “home”.
