SPMT Promises Better Functionality and Performance

Samsung Electronics, LG Electronics, Hynix Semiconductor Inc. and Silicon Image Inc. have jointly established a consortium to promote SPMT (Serial Port Memory Technology) and develop it into an industry standard in the cell phone world.

SPMT refers to a new type of memory interface architecture that goes in serial format, instead of the parallel style that is normally used in today’s memory offerings. The first target of the SPMT Consortium is to apply the technology in Dynamic Random Access Memory (DRAM) chips to be used in cell phones. It is expected that the memory interface can be used in other handheld devices, such as cameras and MP3 players, when it is fully developed and embraced.

The SPMT memory interface offers lots of benefits. For example, users can enjoy a more flexible bandwidth ranging from 200MB/s to 12.6 GB/s. Single or multiple port configurations can be provided with only a single SPMT-enabled memory chip. It can also greatly reduce the number of pin counts by 40% compare to current DRAM technologies, hence requiring less power and cutting system costs.

Representative of the Consortium did not reveal when would the new technology be commercially available, but volume production could start in 2012.

SPMT will definitely gain your support if you are fond of running media-rich and data-intensive applications like GPS, Internet access and emails on your handset, since it does not only reduce energy consumption, but also increase the functionality of your handset and improve its performance as a whole.
