Major Wireless Service Providers in the U.S.

Verizon Wireless

With a customer base of 86.6 million subscribers by April 2009, Verizon Wireless is the largest wireless carrier in the U.S., having the highest customer loyalty in the industry.

Verizon runs the largest and most reliable 3G broadband network across the country, serving 281 million of people. It also tops its competitors and stands as the largest service provider of wireless voice and data network. Verizon's network employs CDMA technology, while offering high-speed EVDO Rev. A. services in most areas.

Verizon purchased Alltel, a regional cell phone operator, in January this year. However, the carrier is required to divest 2.1 million wireless subscribers across 22 states, and also the radio spectrum and other assets for running businesses in these markets, in order to complete the deal. The merge is expected to complete by the end of 2009.

Some of the top phone models available in Verizon stores include LG Versa VX9600, Nokia 7205 Intrigue, Verizon HTC Touch Pro, Samsung Alis 2 (u750) and Samsung Trance (u490).

AT&T

Being the sole carrier for iPhone and iPhone 3G in the U.S., AT&T has the nation’s fastest 3G broadband network, which is now available in nearly 350 major metropolitan areas. It is also the country’s largest Wi-Fi service provider, offering almost 20,000 spots across the U.S. and more than 90,000 globally.

AT&T’s wireless network uses GSM/GPRS technology, using both 850 MHz and 1900 MHz bands. It also offers EDGE high-speed data over most of their network.

In May 2009, AT&T announced to acquire wireless assets from Verizon, including licenses, network assets and 1.5 million current subscribers in 79 service areas. Spanning across 18 states, these markets are mainly in rural areas and most of them are former Alltel territories, including Alabama, Arizona, California, Colorado and Minnesota.

AT&T has an industry-leading lineup of GSM devices available, which work across the world, such as Samsung Propel Pro (i627), LG Xenon, BlackBerry Curve 8900, Nokia E71x and Samsung Jack (i637).

Sprint

Sprint operates a nationwide network with CDMA technology in 1900 MHz band, as well as an iDEN network that works across the country. It also offers high-speed EVDO Rev. A data service in most areas. Sprint is currently planning to build a separate WiMAX data network, which can offer speeds even faster than EVDO Rev. A.

Sprint was the first national carrier to test and launch 4G technology in the U.S. It is likely to extend its 4G services in more markets this year, including Atlanta, Honolulu, Charlotte, Chicago and Philadelphia. As planned, Sprint’s 4G services will reach Boston, Houston, New York, San Francisco and Washington, D.C. by 2010.

Popular phone models that can be found in Sprint stores include the coming Palm Treo Pre (available on June 6), Samsung Instinct S30 (m810), BlackBerry Curve 8330, LG Rumor 2 and HTC Touch Diamond (CDMA).

T-Mobile USA

T-Mobile USA (T-Mobile) is a wholly owned subsidiary of T-Mobile International, one of the leading mobile communication companies around the world. T-Mobile is a national provider of wireless voice, messaging, and data services, and was the first company in the U.S. to offer a nationwide GSM network.

Apart from offering GSM services in both 850 and 1900 MHz frequency bands, T-Mobile also provides its subscribers with WCDMA 3G services, as well as EDGE data services over most of their networks.

T-Mobile was the first to unveil G1 (also known as HTC Dream), which is the first phone ever to run Google’s Android operating system. There are other popular phones with T-Mobile, such as Samsung Memoir (t929), Samsung Behold (t919), BlackBerry Pearl Flip 8220 and Motorola RAZR2 V8.
