Motorola Droid and Original iPhone Outshine Nexus One Sales

Despite the substantial buzz and high anticipation preceding its release, the Nexus One, Google’s Android flagship smartphone, is overshadowed by lower than expected sales. According to mobile analytics firm Flurry, sales of the Nexus One appears to be dismal since its release when compared with other well-hyped devices, such as the Motorola Droid and the Apple iPhone.

Flurry reported that after 74 days of being on sale, about 135,000 Nexus One handsets have been sold via Google’s web store and through T-Mobile USA. By comparison, Motorola sold 1.05 million Droid devices (via Verizon Wireless) in the first 74 days of its availability, while the original iPhone racked up 1 million units (via AT&T) sales in the same time period. Flurry measured the sales figures using the tracking software embedded in applications that are claimed to be running on 80 percent of all iPhone and Android handsets.

Several possible factors may be causing the lack of sales traction of the Google’s phone. Firstly, the phone is only available through T-Mobile, the nation’s number four network. Secondly, customers have to order it from Google’s online store, which may discourage those who want to try the device out in physical stores before buying. Moreover, after the launch, the sales had been hampered by problems like the lack of multi-touch support and poor 3G connectivity.

Fortunately, more carriers are joining T-Mobile in offering service for the device. When the Nexus One was released in January, Google mentioned plans for future versions for other carriers and the search giant latter confirmed the gadget will be available on Verizon Wireless, the largest wireless carrier in the U.S. In mid-March, Google also announced an unsubsidized Nexus One that is compatible with AT&T and the Rogers network in Canada has arrived.

With the Nexus One available on more carriers, hopefully U.S. customers will become more interested in the device and its sales figures will pick up.
