Adobe: More than Half of Smartphones to Support Flash by 2012

In spite of the lack of support from Apple, Adobe has recently made a claim that their popular Flash Player will see continuous growth in the next couple of years. More than 53 percent of the smartphones to be shipped by the end of 2012 will carry Flash support, meaning over 250 million non-feature phones will be Flash-capable, according to Anup Murarka, Adobe's director of technical marketing.

For comparison, industry analysts expect 200 million smartphones to be sold in the current year and about 10 percent of which will be able to run Flash. By 2012, smartphone sales are set to reach 300 million units with more than half of them supporting Abode's software.

Abode has been offering a scaled-down version of Flash for smartphones, allowing users to enjoy richer media contents in gaming, video streaming and Web browsing. According to Murarka, more consumers are about to benefit from the software, as Flash will soon be available on devices running Android Froyo 2.2, the upcoming version of Google's mobile operating system. Apart from Android, users will also see Flash-supported smartphones based on RIM's BlackBerry OS, Nokia's Symbian OS, Palm's webOS and Microsoft Windows Phone 7.

"Maybe we don't get to the iPhone or iPad. If anything, we're seeing continued growth in the install base and the usage of Flash and we see that continuing to grow," said Murarka during an interview with Reuters.

In contrast with other smartphone makers, Apple is more interested in HTML5 but it is not supportive of Adobe's Flash platform at all. Steve Job once described the multimedia software as unreliable and ill-suited for their multi-touch iPhone and iPad devices, doubting its security and power management. The company has also banned developers from creating Flash-based applications on iPhone OS.

It is expected that Apple will continue to resist Flash Player and push hard for HTML5. Will Flash still be able to gain traction in the face of Apple's opposition? Just wait and see then.
