Apple iPad Wins TIME’s 2010 Top Gadget Title
Time Magazine has just revealed its list of top 10 gadgets of 2010, and Apple and Google turned out to be the two big winners, with Apple's iconic iPad chosen as the best device of the year, and the Android-based Samsung Galaxy S as the runner-up.
The iPad helped Apple reclaim the top honor that was taken by the Motorola Droid last year. As described by Time, the iPad is the "most successful" touchscreen tablet in the history of computer, though not the first. By creating a market for interactive magazines and newspaper instantly after its debut, the gadget "finally managed to make tablet computing cool". And considering its striking 3 million sales in the first month alone, the groundbreaking tablet is no doubt a huge success.
Aside from the iPad, three other Apple products also made the list: Apple Macbook Air (11-inch) came in third, followed by the iPhone 4 and Apple TV in the No.6 and No.7 spots, respectively. Apple won altogether four of the top ten places, indicating what a big year 2010 was for the company.
Google's Android mobile OS also made an impression this year. Two smartphones powered by Android, the Samsung Galaxy S and the search giant's own Nexus One, managed to outrank the iPhone 4 and take the second and fifth spots. According to Time, more than nine million devices were running on the software by the end of the third quarter of 2010. Google TV (via Logitech Revue) came in fourth, also ahead of Apple TV at the seventh place. It is obvious that the competition between Apple and Google has never been more intense.
Another point to note is the increasing number of cell phones appearing in Time's gadget rankings. Of the top ten devices, three of them were either Apple's or Android's smartphones. This set a new record, as only two phones were included in 2009 and one in 2008. Following this growing trend, it won't be a surprise to see smartphones dominating the electronic gadget field in the next few years.
