LG Optimus T – A Budget Android Phone with Great Value
The LG Optimus T, released for T-Mobile, is one of the many Android devices that just arrived for the upcoming holiday season. Though attached with an affordable price tag, the phone packs some surprisingly good features that appeal to most consumers, especially smartphone newcomers.
The Optimus T has a simple slab form factor with rounded corners, which is common for touchscreen handsets. The 3.2-inch capacitive touchscreen, as the phone's most noticeable feature, displays 16.5 million colors and 320x480-pixel resolution, and supports multi-touch and pinch-to-zoom gestures. Measuring 4.46" high by 2.32" wide by 0.52" deep and weighing 4.48 ounces, the Optimus T has the perfect size to slip into your pocket without adding too much weight. You can choose from three colors: black, burgundy and titanium.
Powered by Android 2.2 (Froyo), Google's latest OS software, the Optimus T has perfect integration with plenty of Google goodies. There are seven customizable home screens that you can add favorites and widgets to. Android 2.2 also brings us Google Voice Actions, a feature that allows you to call contacts, send text messages, view a map and even do online search simply by speaking to the phone. And of course, you get a full lineup of Google services as usual, like Google Maps with Navigation, Google Search, Gmail, and access to the Android Market.
As for its messaging capabilities, you will find the same support offered by other Android smartphones, including text and multimedia messaging as well as personal and corporate emails. If you want to chat instantly with friends, you can use the pre-installed Google Talk, or other instant messaging clients by downloading their applications from the Android Market. In addition, the phone is bundled with dedicated Twitter and Facebook apps that give you one-touch access to the social networks. Text entry is lightning fast using either the Android keyboard or the Swype keyboard.
Besides, the Optimus T comes with mobile hotspot connectivity, allowing it to act as a portable Wi-Fi hotspot for up to five different devices at the same time. Some other apps preloaded on the device include YouTube, DriveSmart, NeleNav GPS Navigator and T-Mobile's AppPack app store.
Although there is only 170MB of internal memory, the phone allows memory expansion up to 32GB with an additional microSD card, which means you can save a lot of audio and video files and play them with the built-in multi-format media players. There is also a 3.2-megapixel autofocus camera supporting 2X digital zoom and video capturing. Some other worth-mentioning features include integrated FM radio, Bluetooth, GPS, one-touch speakerphone, HTML Web browsing, voice dialing, visual voice mail, a proximity sensor, an accelerometer and a 3.5mm headset jack.
Competent in both hardware and software aspects, the Optimus T outperforms many other smartphones that fall into the same price range, and has proved itself as a strong Android device ideal for both budget-minded consumers and new smartphone users.
