Nearly A Third of iPad Owners Long for a Smaller Screen
Among numerous 10-inch tablets on the market, Apple’s iPad, though its screen measures 9.7 inches to be accurate, is by far the most popular device with a loyal fan base. Despite dominance by the 10-inch models, a new research by Strategy Analytics discovered that almost one third of the existing iPad owners find a 7-inch option more desirable.
The study was conducted on several major tablet markets around the world, including USA, UK, France, Germany, Japan and some Asian regions. While the majority (over 62%) of the iPad owners in the USA, the U.K and China still prefer a 10-inch screen, owners in other regions are showing a great interest in a smaller-sized format. For example, in Germany, 32 percent of Apple’s tablet users favor the smaller option, in comparison to 46 percent of those who want the bigger alternative. And in Japan, a quarter of the iPad owners said they would go for a 7-inch tablet if given a choice.
Taking a more general look at the data, of 923 tablet users (including those who owns an iPad) across different countries, one fifth of them said they would opt for a 7-inch screen for their next device. In fact, the 10-inch favor still claims the top position when it comes to screen size, but the more petite option also shows promising prospects in the near future.
"Clearly Apple has correctly targeted the most preferred screen size with its initial 10 inch iPad offerings,” commented Peter King, Service Director for the Tablet and Touchscreen Strategies Service. “But our survey suggests that if the iPad Nano is launched in the next few weeks, the company can be confident that market potential exists for a smaller screen size." The iPad Nano is rumored to sport a screen that measures 7.85 inches.
The truth is, both screen sizes have their upsides: While a 7-inch model is lighter, more portable and probably attached with a lower price tag, a 10-inch one excels its counterpart in Web browsing, movie watching and multimedia contents. Luckily for us, there are a lot of choices from different brands for both types on the market right now, and we certainly won’t have problem finding the right one.
