Is Blank A Sport is a feature at For The Win where we seek to answer well that very question.

Meet Nik Wallenda daredevil high wire artist subject of made for TV spectacles. On Sunday he walked across the Little Colorado River Gorge just outside Grand Canyon National Park. He was 15 000 feet in the air or about 50 feet higher than the Empire State Building and on a wireline just two inches thick.

This is ridiculous. But is it a sport Glad I asked

Exhibit A Here is the stunt in GIFs

Exhibit B The details from USA TODAY s William M. Welch

He completed the walk in just under 23 minutes.

His tightrope was stretched 1 500 feet above the gorge floor and he made the 1 400 foot long televised walk without a net or safety harness. Wallenda began his walk a bit before 9 40 p.m. ET as the sun was setting at the site in Arizona.

His ground crew reported he had passed the half way point about 11 minutes or so into the walk.

Argument For

These GIFs currently appear on at least one sports website. (This one.)

Substitute a tumbling mat for this gorge squint a little and this could be an Olympic event.

I consider 23 minutes of walking to be light exercise even just on a treadmill or sidewalk.

It might be the only physical activity that LeBron probably couldn t do.

NO HARNESS

Argument Against

Little Colorado River Gorge Pshh. Let s talk when he crosses the Grand Canyon.

Tightrope walking is more a metaphor for the modern human condition than it is a sport.

Nik Wallenda isn t even Tim Tebow though

Probably not really a sport right

Verdict.

Not a Sport. Sorry Nik. This is a stunt not a sport and reverence for semantics is part of the foundation of Is Blank a Sport. But we still salute you and the triumph of man over nature. As a consolation prize here s the dot on the front page of Monday s USA TODAY.
