Review: NBA 2K14 (PS4)

NBA 2K14 PS4 Review by Nick H.

Without a doubt in my mind, NBA 2K14 is the best sports game I have played this year. Of course, everyone's mileage with sports titles generally boils down to what they think of the sport in question, and while 2K has a great engine in place here, they did miss a handful of marks when advancing its series to the next generation consoles as well.

Review: Sid Meier's Ace Patrol: Pacific Skies (PC)

Review by Matt S.

The only criticism I could possibly come up with with the original Ace Patrol game was that its free-to-play structure was a little expensive and didn't really gel with the serious strategy game structure.

So the fact that Pacific Skies is content to charge a small premium (around $6) and then lay off from begging for money makes Pacific Skies the perfect iPad strategy game. Literally, there is no possible criticism I could see anyone with their head screwed on correctly leveling at this game. Pacific Skies is accessible tactical strategy with enough depth to keep the most hardcore of strategy players hooked for quite some time to come.

Review: 2K Drive (iPad)

Early this year, Real Racing 3 turned the media’s attention to the racing genre on iOS devices, much like Mario Kart Wii’s plastic steering wheel peripheral did for the Wii. While Real Racing 3’s beautiful graphics and social integration kept us racing for 40+ hours here at the DDNet offices, its free-to-play model eventually found us growing frustrated and moving on to other titles. 2K Games clearly understands those frustrations and brings a more home console-styled gameplay experience with 2K Drive to our iOS devices, in the hopes of putting us right back into the driver’s seat once again.

Trailer: XCOM: Enemy Within gameplay walkthrough

I suspect that just about all of Digitally Downloaded's readers are looking for XCOM: Enemy Within. After a rather decent effort at changing up the tactical gameplay of the series for some shooter action in The Bureau, it is downright refreshing to know that 2K Games understands that people want more turn-based strategising.

In this latest trailer, 2K Games lead designer, Ananda Gupta, walks players through some of the the new weapons, abilities and maps that players will fight over in this massive expansion. And when we say "massive," we really do mean massive. This piece of DLC is so large that 2K games can't release it as DLC on the consoles (PS3 or Xbox 360). We assume that means the rather excellent iPad version is going to miss out as well.

Still, for PC gamers "more, bigger and better" should be more than enough to sell you on the game.

Review: The Bureau: XCOM Declassified (PS3)

Watching what Edward D. Wood thought would be his magnum opus, Plan 9 From Outer Space, it's easy to see how much care went into such a flawed product. Wood was a truly horrible director, but the ideas found within his work were remarkably progressive; he's a man that cared deeply about issues from environmentalism through to gender roles in society (another one of his infamous films, Glen or Glenda), and these themes were genuine and quite intelligent, even if they were packaged within total tripe.
