Step By Step Procedure to Block a Website

Open DNS:

This is a simple way to block adult content and other harmful content on Internet from your children. Open DNS blocks harmful content automatically on your computer.When any one from your computer try to access the harmful sites.
This is a simple way for NON Techie Parents, You can configure Open DNS in simple four steps.check them below

Step 1:

Open Network and Sharing Center and click on Active Connections (From Control panel or by clicking on Network icon from taskbar )

Step 2:

Click on Adapter Settings, Now select your active network connection device. And Right click on active connection and hit on Properties to open the network device properties.
(Here in our case it Local Area connection)

Step 3:

Now select the Internet Protocol version 4 and hit on Properties

Step 4:

Now change the option from "Obtain DNS server address automatically" to "Use the following DNS server addresses"
Now enter the following DNS server address "208.67.222.123" and "208.67.230.123"
Save the settings and reconnect to Internet, Now try to open any harmful website from your browser, to check weather it is blocking or not.

How to Block specific sites on your computer:

Do you want to Block some specific websites on your computer, then you should continue reading this..!!

Open your "hosts" with notepad which is located Here "c:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc\" and don't forget to open this file with Administrator privileges.
After opening the host file with "Notepad". Goto last line of the file and add the websites to be blocked on your computer in this format

127.0.0.1 yahoo.com

127.0.0.1 facebook.com

127.0.0.1 twitter.com

After adding these lines, you can replace the website address with the specific website address that you want to block on your computer, and save the file.
After saving reconnect Internet to take effect in changes, when anyone try to open the blocked website on your computer they will get "Problem loading page" error.

And better to create a new user account on your computer with "Standard Account" type, so that members on your computer will not get in any way Administrator rights.

Many times we receive an email saying" you have won 10000$!" or you receive a text message on your phone which says " your number won in the lucky draw contest!" Many of us believe it and so we do everything they ask us to do, like giving away passwords and bank account numbers. But by the time we get to know that our passwords have been hacked, it is too late. This serious problem is termed as "phishing" which cyber criminals use to attack common users.

What is Phishing?

Phishing is a technique used by the cyber criminals who try to steal your important and private information by pretending to be someone or something you trust. For example, you get an email which seems to have been sent by your bank asking for your account details, but in fact it is indeed sent by a phishing expert. Though the email seems very real, it is actually sent by a cyber criminal to steal your account passwords. Phishing techniques have become extremely dangerous and sophisticated these days, since they accurately replicate the legitimate trusted source. For example, they will have a real logo, will use the same font and will seem to come from a real email address.

Typical forms of phishing attacks:

1.Account upgrade, system maintenance, software crash or some other mundane reason.
2. Sms text message that seems as if your bank or relative or friend is trying to get in touch with you.
3. Instant message asking you for confidential information.
4.Private message on Facebook containing a link that may take you to a page that looks like a log-in screen for facebook, but actually is a fake log-in screen.

Here in the picture you can see a Facebook phishing attack. Check the URL bar, it is not the Facebook.com

There are a few simple things you can keep in mind in order to avoid the phishing attacks:

Your bank or credit card company shall never ask for your password under any circumstances.
If the email you have received contains a link, do not blindly click on it. It can be a fake link which may lead you to a fake log-in screen or executes some other phishing attack. Before you click on the link, you can find out where it is going to take you by holding your mouse over it for a few seconds and looking at the status bar of your browser.Below one is example of phishing.

You may receive an email with a link which looks real. Even if you hover your mouse over it, it replicates a trusted website. For example, Look at the following web address- https://www.facebook.com@www.abs123.com . At first glance this may look like the facebook link, but in reality it will direct you to a completely different address which begins separately after the @sign.

Always check for "https" in the url address bar of your browser, before you enter any confidential information on website. Typically, only trust worthy websites use "https" and phishing websites use "http".
Make sure that you read the url adress properly. Watch out for websites with spellings that are similar to the actual website. "online.citibenk.com" instead of "online.citybank.com". Cyber criminals are known to register website domain names with a spelling similar to a trusted website.

A simple way to detect a phishing email is, you can carefully look for your full name mentioned in the email. Usually, the cyber criminal doesn't know your full name and may contact you by referring you with Sir, or your email address.
Most popular browsers like google chrome, mozilla firefox maintain a list of known phishing webistes and warn you when you are about to visit any phishing website that appears in their database.

If you receive a link and are not sure whether it is safe to click on it or not, you can however check if it is a phishing attach by submitting the website address to a site called PhishTank. This website maintains a comprehensive list of known phishing websites and provides a quick review if the website is trust worthy or not.

As you can see, the webpage of Phish Tank provides a bar, to specify any suspected link in it and checks for it. If you sign in or register with the website, you can submit any phishing link to the website and soon it updates the fake link.

Here, I have given a link in the bar, to check if it s a phishing attack. We click on the IS IT A PHISH button.

Phishtank has detected the link as a phish. It also provides a rating for 100%. If it is more than 50% you should not enter into the link.

What Is DNS

DNS is the acronym for Domain Name System , our computers communicate to the web via DNS servers, by default our ISP's (Internet Service Providers) fix DNS servers for their users , sometimes these servers may fail and you start seeing the error message "DNS look up failed" even if you have the connection established.

For example if you type www.google.com in your browser or go to 74.125.239.41 you will end up at google home page , what happens is our DNS servers resolve the url google.com into I.P 74.125.239.41 , if your DNS server fails you can't resolve the url and you will end up with error "DNS look up failed" ,

HOW TO FIX DNS FAILURE

You can ask your ISP to rectify the problem , or you can shift your DNS to a third party address ,

Even the Big boss of internet Google has introduced public DNS , what we have to do is to just change the DNS address of our existing connection .Before changing yor DNS address first ensure that your ISP supports Google public DNS and you can also enjoy the features of Good speed , and increased security feature .

For Windows Users:

Go the Control Panel.
Click Network and Internet, then Network and Sharing Center, . Select the connection for which you want to configure Google Public DNS. For example: To change the settings for an Ethernet connection, right-click Local Area Connection, and click Properties.

SPEED UP YOUR NET SPEED AND FIX DNS ERRORS

Select Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4)

Click Advanced and select the DNS tab. If there are any DNS server IP addresses listed there, write them down for future reference, and remove them from this window.

Click OK. Select Use the following DNS server addresses. If there are any IP addresses listed in the Preferred DNS server or Alternate DNS server, write them down for future reference. Replace those addresses with the IP addresses of the Google DNS servers:

For IPv4: 8.8.8.8 and/or 8.8.4.4.

Restart the connection you selected in . Test that your setup is working correctly; see Testing your new settings below.

Test your new DNS :

Open command prompt and paste the command shown below

nslookup -debug www.example.com. 8.8.8.8

If you get the result as shown above then the DNS change is successful if not then get back to your original settings.

IP address of google -->74.125.236.142/

You will see one IP address many times its your web site Address just note down it and run it on your browser.

2.Using Manual Proxy in Browser

How to set manual Proxy in Mozilla Firefox:
