Review: Pokémon X (3DS)

Review by Clark A.

For all its critical and sales successes, the Pokémon franchise has been lambasted by an increasingly vocal minority for reusing the same formula over and over again. Enter Pokémon X (and Y) for the 3DS, arguably the most ambitious title the main series has seen in the last decade. While it doesn’t particularly reinvent the series, it lays tremendous groundwork for doing so and offers a familiar yet original experience along the way.

A quick peek at more Pokemon evolutions

The upcoming Pokemon X & Y will no doubt be a hit, and Nintendo cleared up a few questions in some recent announcements. First, players will get a starter Pokemon from one of their NPC friends: Froakie, Fennekin or Chespin. They will also get another one from Professor Sycamore: Squirtle, Charmander or Bulbasaur.

Pokémon Direct: Pokémon Bank, Poké Transporter, and more detailed

Nintendo held a Pokémon-themed Nintendo Direct event today focused exclusively on the upcoming 3DS releases Pokémon X and Pokémon Y. We’ve rounded up most of the details below.

Friday 10s; Ten game franchises that need a rest

Everyone likes a top-10 list. They're a bit of fun, and always good for discussion. And so each week we pull together a "top 10" list. These are here for fun and laughs - we're not pretending that we're the authority of good games taste in the world and this is purely the author's preferences. Agree with him/ her or not, it's all good. We'd love to hear your own personal preferences in the comments below the list. But please do be civil. We're all friends here.

This week Digitally Downloaded journalist, Joseph, looks at a series of game franchises that are all superb, but possibly need to stop while they're ahead. It's a difficult challenge for game developers and publishers, to know when to stop, but too often we've seen wonderful game franchises that have fallen into mediocrity because the developers didn't know when to say enough is enough.

Be sure to let us know what you think of the list below in the comments, and of course if there are any franchises that you think should be added in there, let us know that as well!

Pokemon games are popular. Who knew?

Over the weekend at a game show in Tokyo, The Pokemon Company released some pretty interesting statistics. Pokemon Black/White sold 15.42 million copies as of March 31 of this year, and Pokemon Black 2/White 2 moved 7.81 million copies. In total, 172 million Pokemon games have been sold worldwide. That is a lot of critter collecting.

Review: Pokémon Rumble U (Wii U)

Back when the 3DS didn't have much software to speak of, I found myself hopelessly addicted to Pokémon Rumble Blast. It was addictive in short bursts and offered a nice little level structure that had me wanting to replay levels over and over again to catch all the critters.

Pokémon Rumble U is not Pokémon Rumble Blast. In a massive backstep from the strides the 3DS game took for this sub-franchise, Pokémon Rumble U is little more than the Wii Pokémon Rumble game.
