Microtransactions in retail games; Sucks to be sure, but what alternative was there?

Opinion by Matt S.

Jim Sterling's a really good guy. I agree with him nine times out of ten in his Jimquisition video show. But in the latest one Sterling's decided to go after microtransactions in retail games (specifically the Microsoft Xbox One launch lineup that included two examples of such - Ryse and Forza). This one I didn't agree with.

I agree that microtransactions suck, but let's just assume for a second that it's expensive to make a game for a newly launched HD console with a tiny install base of a few million (and it's the correct assumption to make); how else are game developers meant to make a healthy profit from their investment? As much fun as it is to hate developers and publishers for being businesses it's a basic reality that as businesses they have a moral and ethical obligation to make a profit from their products.

There is evidence everywhere that even when building games for consoles that have tens, if not hundreds of millions units in houses, it is still too expensive for develop for these devices and making games for those consoles is sending developers bankrupt. The industry has not been a genuinely sustainable one from a business point of view for some time. In just the last year the following developers have all gone bankrupt, and these are just the ones that we've reported on:

The top 10 games to look forward to: EB Games Expo 2013 edition

EB Expo was bigger and better in 2013. Much bigger and better. It was a who's who of the Australian games industry, from the big international publishers right down to the tiny local indies churning out top quality stuff for PC and mobile.

We've got an absolute wealth of hands-on previews, interviews and opinion pieces to come over the next week, but we thought it would be a good idea to also get the team together (that being Matt, Owen, Aidan and Sam) and come up with our top 10 games to look forward to. The below ten games are the ones that impressed us more than anything else, and these games should all be very high on your "to play" list.

And in no particular order:

Hands on with Ryse: Son of Rome

Preview by Owen S.

One game that really stood out for me at the EB Expo 2013 was a launch title for the Xbox One; Ryse: Son of Rome

A cinematic action adventure title that Microsoft seems to be heavily relying on to sell consoles, the expectations of this remarkable tale surrounding an unwitting centurion from Ancient Rome is high. Whilst the many specifics of the story are still, understandably, being held close to the chest what I did see promises to offer juicy plotlines of revenge and patriotism.
