Review: Pokémon X (3DS)

Review by Clark A.

For all its critical and sales successes, the Pokémon franchise has been lambasted by an increasingly vocal minority for reusing the same formula over and over again. Enter Pokémon X (and Y) for the 3DS, arguably the most ambitious title the main series has seen in the last decade. While it doesn’t particularly reinvent the series, it lays tremendous groundwork for doing so and offers a familiar yet original experience along the way.

Review: Aqua Moto Racing 3D (3DS)

Review by Clark A.

Aqua Moto Racing 3D is rather humble in the current landscape of racing games on the 3DS. It has no star power, no prestigious franchise history, and opts for a comparatively niche jet ski theme. Even the title is modest, making no bold claims and presenting only factual information. Impressively enough, it’s also a competent package that suffers more from being devoid of personality than anything else.

Review: AiRace Speed (3DS)

Review by Harvard L.

I've developed a lot of respect for QubicGames after playing AiRace: Speed. We've all flown planes through tunnels in one game or another, so much so that it can hardly be called a fresh gameplay experience. AiRace takes the familiar gameplay of these titles and gives it a bigger budget and more impact, proving that maybe there's still some life in tunnel flyers after all.

Etrian Odyssey Untold demo is now open for exploration

While we’ve only just published our Etrian Odyssey IV: Legends of the Titan review here at DDNet, let’s not forget that Atlus’ Etrian Odyssey Untold: The Millenium Girl is rapidly approaching its October 1st release date on the 3DS.

To get you hyped up for the next installment in this old-school JRPG grindfest, Atlus has opened the iron gates of its upcoming title on the 3DS eShop, granting access to the first two floors of the game’s Story Mode. Whether you purchase the game at retail or digitally once it is released, be sure not to delete your save data from the demo version, as it will carry over right into the full release of the game.

Review: Sonic Generations (3DS)

Sonic Generations on home consoles far exceeded the standards of the average anniversary game. Ironing out the kinks of Sega’s past efforts such as Sonic Unleashed and Sonic Colours, the game seamlessly rotated between 2D and 3D mechanics and transcended what could have been a cash-in nostalgia gimmick. Backed up by gorgeous visuals and one of the finest soundtracks in the entire franchise, it’s no wonder fans see the once-troubled hedgehog as on the rise.

Review: '92 Summer Carnival: Recca (3DS)

As an optimist, I have to believe that at some point in the development of Summer Carnival '92: Recca, a soft spoken member of the team finally mustered up the guts to ask whether the game was going to be too fast for the average player. After playing the finished product, it's a bit of a pity that our hypothetical developer friend was unceremoniously tossed out a high window.

Review: Heavy Fire: Black Arms 3D (3DS eShop)

Last year’s 3DS eShop Heavy Fire offerings, Special Operations 3D, fell far short of what Teyon previously delivered on the budget retail PS3 release, Heavy Fire: Afghanistan, even though it chose to stick with the same dusty desert setting. This year, Teyon takes us out of the desert heat and into the shade of the South American jungles to track down drug smuggling cartels. But does making the move out of the desert lose all of the game’s heat in the process?

Review: Smash Bowling 3D (3DS)

I had a chance recently to review a fishing title from Big John Games recently, and with both titles being of the sports variety, it makes you wonder if this is the direction they will continue to go. Bowling is one of those games that is fairly simple in premise, but can be a challenge to create replay value for on almost any system. I think to date that Wii Bowling is probably my favourite video game iteration of the sport, but Smash Bowling 3D does a good, but not great, job of giving you the game on the go.

Review: My Farm 3D (3DS)

I'm a big fan of farming games. I devour every Harvest Moon game that gets released on any platform, and I've even had fun with the serious Farming Simulator series. There's something cathartic about sitting down to one of these games knowing that all you're going to be doing is dropping water of virtual plants and feeding polygonal ducks and cows.

Review: SteamWorld Dig (3DS)

Nintendo's first attempt at a handheld download platform, DSiWare, wasn't one that put up many classic or memorable games. There were a handful, though, such as the Art Style games or more experimental puzzlers like Spin Six.

SteamWorld Tower Defence was one that came so, so close. As its name suggests it was a tower defence game that was notable for a stylish steampunk setting and gorgeous graphics. It also struggled with some ridiculous difficulty spikes that made the game near-unplayable for any but the most committed.

Review: Undead Bowling (3DS)

The title is explanation enough. Undead Bowling is a bowling game that features zombies as pins with a gritty, post-apocalypse setting. It's not original and it's definitely not engrossing, to be quite honest. With the 3DS limitations, it's a choppy, blocky mess with a laughably small amount of content considering its asking price.

Review: 3D Game Collection (3DS)

Back when I was a youngster, whenever my family would make a lengthy trip on a train or plane or some other form of transport where I was going to be sitting on my backside for long periods of time, my parents would buy me one of those puzzle books that newsagents sell for a couple of dollars.

Review: Sonic Drift 2 (3DS)

Think about all the things that make a great racing game; an intense sensation of speed, well-balanced racing lines and track design, and for party racers, a nice set of characters and unlockable weapons.

That's my list of requirements; you probably have your own. I think, however, we can all agree that one thing we most definately were not thinking about was "hey, a good racer should have turns that pop in so quickly that if you're not already turning, then you're going to go off the track."

Bam. Now you know why Sonic Drift 2 is one of the worst games I've ever played.
