AT&T Tops its Rivals, Becomes the Leader in Smartphones
Recent survey showed that customers in the U.S. are choosing one carrier more than any other for their smartphones or integrated devices. According to M:Metrics, a research unit of comScore, AT&T had 11.8 million smartphone users in March 2009, while its rival, Verizon Wireless ranked second by having less than half the number at 5.1 million.
Many factors have contributed to AT&T’s success. The carrier has the fastest 3G network in the nation and offers almost 20,000 Wi-fi spots across the U.S., making mobile data accessible to everyone. Its industry-leading lineup of devices, including BlackBerry Bold and Nokia E71x, also helped attracting customers. Also, AT&T offers GSM phones that work across the world, while Verizon, for example, only offers CDMA phones.
That’s not the end of the list. Being a sole carrier of Apple iPhone in the U.S., AT&T’s smartphone success, to a certain extent, was driven by Apple as well. Representative of AT&T said the carrier activated 1.6 million iPhones in Q1 2009, which made up more than half of the carrier’s smartphone sales during the quarter.
The carrier was also devoted to the development of "quick messaging phones", which provide messaging options like SMS, MMS, Instant Messaging (IM) and mobile data applications. Together with smartphones, the two categories formed a portfolio of integrated devices, with the number of subscribers doubled over the past year.
To date, AT&T offers five different open operating systems and the portfolio includes nine Wi-Fi-enabled devices and five touchscreen handsets.
