Google Android Shipments to Grow 900% in 2009?

Global shipment of smartphones running Google’s Android software platform is expected to outgrow its competitors and jump massively by 900% in 2009, as Strategy Analytics forecast in its latest research report.

The research and consulting firm noted that the huge support from mobile operators and vendors has significantly driven the adoption of the Google-developed operating system. There are two major factors that contributed to Android’s popularity among cell phone manufacturers. The OS is a low-cost licensing model, so it costs much less to launch an Android handset compare to one that runs Windows Mobile. And also, the OS has a "semi-open-source" structure, which allows developers to extend it more easily to work with new hardware features.

The Android started gaining traction in the U.S. in the second half of 2008 and is gradually establishing more of a presence in Europe and Asia this year. Most of the leading cell phone manufacturers like HTC, Motorola and Samsung have also planned to build and launch Android-based handsets in 2009. Therefore, it is certain that the OS will see a huge growth and is likely to become a top-tier player in the smartphone market over the next two to three years.

However, it is important to note that the OS is actually expanding from a relatively small initial base, especially when compared to the sales of iPhone. Such predicted increase in Android shipment may be easier to achieve with a smaller base and the sales volume may seem growing faster when judging by pure percentages.

Meanwhile, Strategy Analytics expected shipment of the iPhone OS from Apple to grow by 79% this year, being the second fastest-growing smartphone OS.
