Home Landlines Losing Ground to Cell Phones
More American families are cutting the cord of their landline phones and use only cell phones at home, according to a recent survey released by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
Survey results showed that the number of U.S. households opting for only cell phones, for the first time, has surpassed those that are only connected by traditional landline phones. During the second half of 2008, about 20% of U.S. households had only cell phones at home, while 17% only used the landlines but no cell phones.
It is easy to understand why there are more people switching to cell phones and giving up landlines. By holding both the landline and the cell phone at home, they are basically paying two bills for the same service, so they may consider terminating either one to reduce expenses under the current downturn.
CDC conducted the survey from July to December 2008 and has interviewed a total of 12,597 households in the U.S.

The number of cell-phone-only households jumped by almost 3 percentage points over the first half year, which was so far the largest six-month increase since the government started collecting such data in 2003. Looking back in 2003, only 4% of U.S. households just have cell phones at home, while 42% stuck with landline phones only.

While choosing between the two options, people are more likely to pick a cell phone, since it offers a wider range of services like text messaging, video and music, compare to normal landline phones. What’s more, the expansion of wireless networks has also made the use of cell phones more convenient.
