LG’s Plan to Build its Smartphone Business

LG Electronics has set some high goals for its mobile business this year. The South Korea based company, currently the world’s third largest cell phone maker, wants to climb up to one of the top 2 positions within 2 years by achieving a double-digit market share in the global smartphone market.

On the road to this target, LG plans to ship 140 million handsets worldwide by the end of 2010, which will be 20 percent up from last year’s figure. The plan involves the additions of 20 new devices to its smartphone lineup, which will be based on three operating systems, Google’s Android, Microsoft’s Windows Mobile and Linux. Android will be making up for more than half of the additions, despite LG’s previous pledge of making Windows Mobile the primary platform for its smartphones.

According to its press release, for the first half of 2010, the company will mainly introduce some user-friendly smartphones for first-time buyers. These will be followed by more cutting-edge and high-end devices, which are expected to fight against strong rivals such as iPhone, BlackBerry and Palm smartphones. It is hoped that the strategy will bring the 10 millionth smartphone of the vendor sometime this year.

To achieve the goal, LG has already taken some measures: approximately 100 mobile retail stores were opened in the developing world, a special smartphone business division was established, and the company has considerably increased its spending on R&D by 30 percent. Strong push will be placed in the Korea and North America markets this year.

"We are facing another revolutionary change in the mobile industry thanks to the rapid growth of smartphones and demand for more content and better services," said Dr. Skott Ahn, President and CEO of LG Electronics Mobile Communications Company.

LG has been mainly focusing on developing basic and mid-range handsets for years. As a relatively latecomer in the smartphone field, the company will have to find its competitive strength in order to top other strong players.
