Garmin-Asus Garminfone – A Sophisticated Navigation-centric Smartphone


The Garmin-Asus Garminfone from T-Mobile is a capable smartphone fully integrated with Garmin's advanced navigation software. As a successor to the Garmin Nuvifone G60, the Garminfone is powered by the Android platform, offering a lot more applications and better messaging features to customers.

The Garminfone has a 3.5-inch HVGA (320x480 pixels) capacitive touchscreen and four touch-sensitive buttons on the front. Both of them respond to your finger touch with haptic feedback. It also features a 3.2-megapixel autofocus camera with video recording capability. And with the ability to geo-tag photos, you can get location details about your surroundings anytime. Apart from these, the phone is also equipped with an accelerometer and a proximity sensor.

Like other Garmin devices, the Garminfone is preloaded with North American maps and nearly 6 million points of interest for you to access even when you are offline. Maps are available in both 2D and 3D views. The phone provides voice-prompted and on-screen turn-by-turn directions and automatic re-routing. Together with the full suite of Connected Services, you also get real-time traffic, weather forecasts, flight status, gas prices and more useful localized content that keep you informed.

Other onboard GPS-related features include the "Where am I?" app, which tells you your current location and the nearest police stations, hospitals and gas stations. With Garmin Voice Studio, you can even record your own voice as the navigation prompts.

Although the Garminfone only runs Android 1.6, it is a powerful device packed with Google's mobile services, including Google Search, Gmail, Google Calendar, Google Talk, Google Maps with Street View, Android Market, Youtube and more. It also comes with full messaging support: SMS, MMS, IM plus personal and work email. You can sync emails, calendar and contacts via Microsoft Exchange.

In addition, the Garminfone offers an Android WebKit browser with pinch-to-zoom gesture support. There is a music player that works with a variety of audio formats, such as MP3, WMA, AAC and AAC+. You can sync it with your desktop music library via doubleTwist and buy more songs from Amazon MP3 Store. As for video playback, the phone supports MPEG4, H.264, H.263 and WMV formats.

Other features on the Garminfone include 3G, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, USB mass storage. It offers 4GB of flash memory and its microSD card slot supports cards up to 32GB. The device measures 4.57" high by 2.46" wide by 0.46" deep and has a weight of 4.9 ounces.

With rich location-aware content, accurate navigation and an array of applications, the Garmin-Asus Garminfone proves itself to be a cool blend of a reliable navigator and a feature-packed smartphone.
