iPhone Users Named AT&T the Worst Carrier
AT&T continues to gain new subscribers every quarter, but obviously it is Apple's iPhone that attracts the customers, not the carrier's service. According to a consumer satisfaction study by Consumer Reports, AT&T was rated as the worst performing wireless network operator in the U.S., and most of the discontent was from iPhone owners.
The group conducted an online survey of 58,000 consumers who subscribed to different U.S. carriers: AT&T, Verizon, Sprint, T-Mobile and U.S. Cellular. Of all carriers, AT&T not only had the lowest score, but was also the only one that slipped significantly in overall satisfaction compared with last year's results.
The report also highlighted the dissatisfaction of customers who owned an iPhone, which is currently exclusive to AT&T. iPhone users made up more than half of the AT&T subscribers surveyed, and they also represented the most disgruntled bunch, as they have rated the carrier's voice and data (Internet and email) services much lower than smartphone owners using other operators.
In response to the dismal review, AT&T issued a statement reiterating that its mobile broadband network was tested as the fastest in the nation, and that its dropped call rate was within 0.1% from the industry leader. Despite of the complaints about the service, people still keep coming to the provider for Apple's smartphone. During the third quarter of 2010, AT&T activated more than 5.2 million iPhones, which marked its "most iPhone activations ever in a quarter".
And once again, the survey brought up the speculation of a Verizon-branded iPhone. It is generally believed that many customers will dump AT&T if this really happens. Consumer Reports also suggested that such device could help boost sales for Verizon.
On the other hand, regional carrier U.S. Cellular surpassed Verizon and scored the highest in the overall satisfaction rating, according to the study. This led to people's surprise as Verizon has been claiming the top spot almost every year since 2003. Sprint and T-Mobile followed closely behind as the third and the fourth. It goes without saying that AT&T, as the one left out in the cold, better work harder to catch up with other carriers before losing all of its unhappy customers.
