Motorola Flipside – A Powerhouse at Work or Play

The Motorola Flipside, a mid-range side slider powered by Google Android OS 2.1 (Éclair), is currently available via AT&T. Featuring the MotoBlur interface, support for push corporate email and a full QWERTY keyboard, the smartphone is ready to take care of both your social and work lives.

The Flipside does not have a flashy design; it is a traditional slab with a slide-out keyboard hidden underneath a 3.1-inch, HVGA (320 x 480 pixels) capacitive touchscreen. The display offers haptic feedback and pinch-to-zoom gesturing, and works with the embedded ambient light sensor, proximity sensor and accelerometer. Unlike most other handsets with similar form factors, the Flipside also sports a laptop-like track pad that acts as an alternative navigation tool. At 4.3" high by 2.3" wide by 0.6" deep and 5.1 ounces, it is a bit bulky and heavy but has a sturdy construction.
To enhance your Android experience on the Flipside, Motorola has thrown in its own widget-based MotoBlur interface. That not just gives us seven panels for home screen customization, but also offers better integration with Facebook, MySpace and Twitter. For email, you can get access to both personal and corporate email with support for Microsoft Exchange and push Gmail. Besides, there are multiple messaging options, including text and multimedia messaging, and instant messaging (via AIM, Google Talk, Windows Live Messenger or Yahoo Messenger).

With MotoBlur's backup service, all your personal, work and social networking contacts are stored on a secure server. That way, even if you have lost your phone, you can still wipe the data on the original phone and restore them on a new device remotely.

As expected, the Flipside is fully bundled with the usual Android elements. You can find numerous applications on the Android Market, though the device is already preloaded with Google Maps with Navigation, YouTube and other Google mobile services. A full HTML Android browser with tabbed browsing and Flash Lite is also onboard. In addition, there is an Android standard music and video player for playing AAC, H.264, MP3, MPEG-4 and other formats. Last but not least, the Flipsdie features a FM radio, a 3.5mm headset jack, and a 3.0-megapixel camera/camcorder with fixed focus and digital zoom.

While the Flipside itself is embedded with 512MB of internal memory, its microSD card slot can accept up to 32GB. You can connect to AT&T's 3G network or use the built-in Wi-Fi capabilities. Bluetooth 2.1 and GPS are included as well.

To sum up, the Motorola Flipside is a well-balanced device with great selections of mid-range features. If you are a cost-conscious consumer looking for an easy-to-use Android phone, this would be a good choice.
