Over 1.5 Million Windows Phone 7 Devices Shipped (Not Activated)
Six weeks after the launch, Microsoft has finally revealed the sales figures of its new Windows Phone 7 mobile platform. According to an official interview released by the company on December 21, 2010, 1.5 million Windows Phone 7 devices have been sold to retailers and mobile operators during this period.
Windows Phone 7, the mobile operating system that powers smartphones such as HTC HD7, HTC Surround, Samsung Focus, LG Quantum and Dell Venue Pro, debuted in Europe and Asia on October 21 and in the U.S. on November 8. Contrary to stories saying the launch has been deviled by weak sales, the software giant officially confirmed that its manufacturing partners have already shipped over 1.5 million handsets in the first six weeks.
Nevertheless, the sales data is somewhat ambiguous, as it only tells us how many Windows Phone 7 phones have been shipped out to retailers and wireless carriers to put on their store shelves, but not actually activated by end users. In other words, it is possible that quite a number of these 1.5 million handsets are still sitting on the shelves. The phone manufacturer sales indicate the confidence the carriers have in the OS, yet fail to show its popularity among consumers.
Some industry analysts estimate the actual number at about 750,000 units, which is still a lackluster when compared to those of its two biggest rivals: Google claimed to activate more than 300,000 Android devices on a daily basis, whereas Apple activates 230,000 iPhones each day.
"We know we have tough competition, and this is a completely new product," defended Achim Berg, Microsoft's vice president of business and marketing for Windows Phones. "We're in the race – it's not a sprint but we are certainly gaining momentum and we're in it for the long run." Berg also said the company would soon be releasing the first of its several software updates in the next few months.
It might be too early to draw a conclusion on the market share of Windows Phone 7 considering its late entry to the smartphone arena. Hopefully the new year will give the revamped platform a chance of reestablishing a footing in the market.
