Skype Video Calling Ready for iPhone
Skype has released a much-anticipated official update to its iPhone application, bringing millions of Apple iPhone users the ability to make and receive free video calls around the world over both Wi-Fi and 3G networks.
Now available on the App Store for downloads, Skype 3.0 works with iOS 4.0 or newer devices with built-in front-facing and/or rear-facing cameras, namely the iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS and fourth-generation iPod touch. The revamped app allows users to share real-time video on their devices over Wi-Fi or 3G among each other, as well as Windows, Mac or Linux desktop users with a Skype account. For the iPad and third-generation iPod Touch, though they are not camera-enabled, can still be used for receiving video calls.
In fact, the iPhone 4 also includes Apple's own FaceTime app for video chatting, but it does not work outside Wi-Fi and does not allow calls to Windows-based computers.
Skype's software supports both portrait and landscape modes. You can swap between the front and rear cameras during a call. Apart from original functions such as chatting with friends using messaging service while on a call, the update also contains additional features, like enabling desktop users to share a view of their computer screens with iPhone users.
Skype is not the first third-party app that offers free calling services. Some existing players include Fring, Tango and Oik, but their user bases are not as wide as Skype's, as there are approximately 25 million concurrent users logged into Skype at any given time. Its software is also one of the top five free iPhone apps in 2010, according to Apple.
Now that Skype has made a steady landing on the iOS devices, an Android version is probably its next step to extend its footprints deep into the Internet calling market.
