Samsung Alias 2… and its Magic Keypad!
Released for Verizon Wireless, Samsung Alias 2 (u750) is a messaging phone with a dual-hinge design. While the flip can be opened either in portrait or landscape mode, users can open it vertically just like a regular flip phone to place a call, or horizontally to text with the QWERTY keyboard. In either way, the clamshell remains easy and convenient to use.The highlight of Alias 2 is definitely its keypad with E-ink Technology, which Verizon calls it "Magic Keypad". Rather than a load of keys with small labels, the handset's keypad actually changes automatically depending on what the user wants. Open it vertically, the keypad will be an alphanumeric style keyboard; open it landscape-wise you will find the keyboard transforming into a full QWERTY one.
Compare to other smartphones on the market, while almost every key has to serve two different functions, the E-ink keyboard on Alias 2 is making text entry much easier, with only one character displayed at a time and keys not in use would simply go white.
To work with the innovative and user-friendly keypad, Alias 2 offers multiple messaging options, including SMS, MMS, Instant Messaging and emails. It also supports RemoSync, allowing users to synchronize corporate emails, contacts and calendar. However, the phone lacks Wi-Fi and POP-email, so users will not be able to access their email accounts in AOL, Yahoo and Hotmail on the device.
Besides a bright and sharp 2.6" main display, Alias 2 also comes with a 1.3" external display, which shows information including the date, time, battery life, signal strength, and caller ID. Dedicated controls for the music player can be found below the external display, which allow users to activate the player and go through the songs without opening the flip.
Additional features of Alias 2 include a 2.0-megapixel camera, a 2.5mm headset jack, a proprietary charger jack, stereo Bluetooth technology and a MicroSD memory card slot that supports up to 16GB storage. Same as other cell phones carried by Verizon, Alias 2 can also work with the VZ Navigator for turn-to-turn directions, as well as V CAST Music and Video for streaming music files and video clips.
Measuring 2.04"(H) x 4.01"(W) x 0.67"(D) and weighing 4.34 ounces, Alias 2 may seem slightly boxy and heavy. But with a well-stocked feature set, it is still an inventive messaging phone and a functional communication device that displays good performance.
