GHYS: Nokia’s Popularity among Teenagers Slipping
According to the Global Habbo Youth Survey Brand Update 2009 (GHYS), Nokia remains the number one cell phone brand among 112,000 teenagers, aged between 13 to 16, across 30 markets. Though it is the third consecutive year for Nokia to top its rivals, the popularity of the brand among teenagers is obviously fading.
Figures showed that Nokia has lost teen support this year. In 2009, around 21% of surveyed teens named Nokia their number one favorite but there were 28% of them last year. The manufacturer has also seen drop in the market share when looking at some markets. It is the number one in only 13 countries this year, down from 15 in 2008.
Following Nokia is Sony Ericsson who comes second on the chart, and at the same time, being the number one in nine countries including the UK and Germany. However, its overall lead also dropped on year, with only 18% of teens naming Sony Ericsson their number one in 2009 compared to 21% last year.
Samsung, LG and Apple has made up the rest of the top five on the global chart, while Apple, ranking the fifth this year, did not even show up in the world’s top ten in the previous year. BlackBerry has also entered the top ten for the first time, indicating the increasing demand for smartphones.
Motorola has experienced the most drastic loss in teen support this year. It was the third favorite global cell phone brand last year, but has now fallen out of the top five, ranking the sixth on the 2009 chart. It comes third and sixth in Brazil and Canada this year, but it was the number one brand in these two markets in 2008.
The GHYS 2009 has excluded some of the emerging markets like China and India, in which Nokia is often positioned as a major or even the biggest player.
