Manufacturers to Speed Up Wireless Connectivity in Cars

Most of the vehicle manufacturers around the world will focus on developing wireless data connectivity in their next-generation cars by 2012, says research firm Gartner.

During the past two years, consumers in mature automotive markets like the U.S. and Western Europe have shown increasing interests in such technologies, including Wi-fi, GPS and 3G. With more connected devices emerged, such as smartphones and mobile Internet devices (MIDs), consumers have shown greater demand for staying connected – no matter they are at work, at home, or even when driving.

Gartner says more carmakers will explore new web-based applications and services for in-car use, which offer dynamic content to enhance driving experience. Consumer interests can then be stimulated, hence generating revenues. Also, automotive companies will build more in-house expertise to offer in-car connectivity solutions for future lineup.

As Gartner predicts, by 2016, consumers will consider in-car wireless data connectivity as significant as traditional automobile features, such as safety and fuel efficiency. Vehicle manufacturers will have to speed up their development, so as to offer such functionality in the next few years to meet future demand.

Meanwhile, earlier this year, ABI Research foresees shipments of Wi-fi-enabled cell phones to double in volume from January 2008 to the end of 2010; such growth is expected to continue through 2013. The data clearly signals that Wi-fi technology will continue to expand its presence in the cell phone industry over the next few years.

Some of the popular Wi-fi phones currently available on the market include HTC Touch Pro and iPhone 3G. According to ABI Research, about 80% of HTC’s handset lineup are Wi-fi-enabled, while all Apple iPhones have Wi-fi connectivity. As many as 75% of iPhone users are using the feature regularly.
