Google: 18 to 20 New Android Phones Coming This Year

There will be 18 to 20 Android phones hitting the market this year, according to Andy Rubin, Senior Director for Mobile Platforms with Google.

These new phones running Google’s Android platform will be brought by eight or nine manufacturers, as Rubin revealed. However, he rejected to disclose exactly which companies or carriers are involved. Market sources said the list of makers would most likely include HTC, Samsung, LG, Motorola and Sony Ericsson.

Rubin expects to see faster adoption of the new devices in Europe, since U.S. carriers will probably spend more time creating unique and customized their own Android handsets, so as to make their products more competitive and stand out of rival phones.

Of the upcoming Android phones, five or six of them will deliver "The Google Experience", one of the three levels of Android deployment. Handsets belong to this category will have to include the Google logo on the device. These handsets will come with a wide range of pre-loaded Google applications like G-Mail, but these apps cannot be removed. Users will have unrestricted access to the Android Market.

Another level of deployment "Android with Strings" will be less controlling. Manufacturers will have to sign a distribution agreement with Google to include the giant’s mobile apps on their phones. But the makers are allowed to modify or amend these apps if they wish to. Rubin claims that 12 to 14 of the new Android phones will fall into this group.

The remaining option will be "Google Free", where manufacturers can install the free-to-use Android platform, but having no access to Google’s mobile apps on their handsets. Some "Google Free" devices may hide Android under customized user interfaces.

It is almost halfway through the year but there are, so far, only two Android-powered handsets on the market, including T-Mobile G1 and HTC Magic. Therefore, be prepared for a flood of Android products by the end of this year.
