Low-tech Guidebook Beats Hi-tech Smartphones?
Ever wonder what is the best information tool to bring with you while traveling? Is it a smartphone having all the apps to guide you through? Or simply a guidebook will do?
Conde Nast Traveler magazine recently sent three writers to Moscow – one bringing an iPhone, one with a BlackBerry Bold and the third with a guidebook. The magazine gave them a series of tasks to complete, see whether the gadgets or the book were more helpful.
The guidebook-girl was the winner in five of the nine tasks, including booking a hotel room that costs less than $300 per night at last minute, looking for an affordable Russian restaurant beloved by locals and finding a pharmacy at midnight to buy aspirin.
The two gadget-assisted writers complained of Moscow’s slow data network, which made downloading information slow and difficult. This often used up their batteries during the trip, causing the batteries to run low or even go dead. The iPhone-assisted writer also noted that the weather was so cold, and the gadget just could not recognize his frozen fingers or gloved hand, hence making operation much more difficult.
If you do not want to be caught with a dead battery again, the best solution is to keep an extra cell phone battery. Or you may get a rapid charger, so you can spend less time recharging the battery. Also, the iPhone guy does not have to worry about the operating problem, as long as he has a stylus for iPhone.

The result turned out to be quite surprising. The female writer with the guidebook completed most of the challenges more quickly and easily than the two guys with gadgets!

Some may argue that the smartphones would work much better in places with more advanced data networks, such as Europe and Japan. But actually, many of the problems suggested by the two guys can be easily solved.
