iPhone Driving Consumers to AT&T

A recent survey found that Apple’s iPhone, which was released two years ago, is still drawing lots of consumers to its carrier AT&T.

Research firm ChangeWave had interviewed more than 4,000 cell phone users in March this year. Results showed that about 13% of the interviewees are "very or somewhat likely" to switch to another wireless service provider in the coming six months. Among this group of consumers, 33% of them said they would join AT&T.

As suggested by ChangeWave, one of the main factors luring consumers to AT&T is consumers’ interest in the popular iPhone. If the demand for iPhone increases, there will also be more consumers joining AT&T, which is the sole distributor of iPhone in the U.S.

On one hand, AT&T will be able to enjoy rapid sales growth from the rising demand for iPhone; but on the other hand, it still faces great pressure from its biggest rival – Verizon Wireless. The ChangeWave report found that Verizon holds higher customer satisfaction compare to AT&T. The carrier also has the least number of dropped calls; while Verizon customers experienced about 1.8% of dropped calls in the past 90 days, AT&T consumers reported a much higher frequency of 2.9%.

There are always rumors saying that Verizon is in talks with Apple, hoping to launch the gadget in their stores as well. However, it is quite unlikely to have a Verizon-iPhone because of the carrier’s current network configuration. Verizon is sticking to its CDMA technology, but what an iPhone uses is the more popular GSM standard.

Opening to a GSM-based network would probably allow Verizon to bring an iPhone to its iconic lineup of cell phones. Apart from retaining original customers, the carrier can also attract new ones from other service holders.

The exclusivity of iPhone carrying for AT&T in the US will expire next year. But there are reports saying that the carrier is discussing the matter with Apple, hoping to extend the deal to 2011.
