Sony Ericsson: No More M2 Cards!

Phone manufacturer Sony Ericsson (SE) is dropping Sony’s proprietary Memory Stick Micro format (M2) and will use the more universal MicroSD in all its new handsets.

Speaking to TrustedReviews, SE Global Marketing Director Fortuné Alexander confirmed that the company is "moving in that direction", and would adopt MicroSD across its forthcoming cell phone lineup. Alexander admitted that MicroSD would be part of SE’s strategy from now on, and will completely replace M2 in some of its cell phone lines. However, both formats will still be important to the company.

There are actually hints of SE’s change: not only that its K850i features a combo slot of M2 and MicroSD, but also the three newly announced SE phones – the Satio, the Aino and the Yari – are all equipped with MicroSD slots instead of the company’s proprietary standard. It is expected that there are at least a few more unannounced handsets that have already made such switch.

It sounds reasonable for SE to move to more universal formats in order to cut production costs. It can then develop lower-priced cell phones and increase the margins. This can also explain the company's decision to move to a universal charger system of Micro USB as announced earlier.

Jointly developed by Sony and SanDisk, M2 sticks have a maximum capacity of 16GB and are compatible only with SE cell phones and Sony’s electronic products. By applying an adapter, M2 can be converted to Memory Stick PRO or Memory Stick PRO Duo formats for Sony’s gaming devices.

A MicroSD card, on the other hand, is more widely accepted and is currently the most popular memory card format in the market. High-capacity MicroSD (MicroSDHC) cards on the market can house storage size up to 16GB. MicroSD cards are often used with Motorola, Samsung, Nokia and LG cell phones.
