NPD Group Sees Rapid Growth in U.S. Smartphone Market

As shown by statistics from NPD, smartphones sales in the U.S. represented 23% of all handset sales in Q4 2008, almost doubling the 12% recorded in the same period of 2007. Half of these are touchscreen phones, such as the BlackBerry Storm (9530), while 70% of them offer QWERTY keyboards like the LG enV2 (VX9100).
NPD reported that more smartphone users opt for high-speed data network nowadays. Nearly two-thirds of all smartphones now operate on a 3G network, up from just 46% a year ago.
As competition heats up, carriers are expected to further cut prices and offer more special promotions to raise their competitiveness. Many popular smartphones like Sprint’s Palm Pre and T-Mobile G1 have set their prices below $200 on contracts.
Market leader iPhone has also joined the battle by selling its newest 16GB iPhone 3G S, which was launched on June 19, at $199. Moreover, right before the launching of iPhone 3G S, Apple Inc. has halved the price of 8GB iPhone 3G to a breakthrough price of $99, which will probably trigger strong sales growth.
