Two-Thirds of Online Buyers Own Web-enabled Handsets
A research by PriceGrabber.com, a leading provider of online comparison shopping service, reveals that almost two-thirds of U.S. online consumers own a cell phone that can connect to the Web.
PriceGrabber.com has carried out the Mobile Internet Shopping Trends survey in March this year, interviewing 3,305 U.S. online consumers that own cell phones. Findings revealed that around 58% of the respondents have a cell phone capable of connecting to the Internet. Among these respondents, 21% of them own a smartphone, 8% has an iPhone , and the remaining ones own other types of Web-enabled handsets.
With more smart devices rolling out in 2008, such as iPhone 3G, T-Mobile G1 (Google Phone) and the BlackBerry series, about 17% more online consumers purchased their first Web-enabled handsets last year. Despite the unfavorable economic climate, there were also 8% of respondents who made such purchase in Q1 of 2009.
As Web-enabled cell phones are getting more and more popular in the U.S., many online shoppers have turned into mobile Internet shoppers. Survey results showed that 10% of online consumers make their purchases using their handsets, while 16% of them use the device for comparing prices and 16% for researching product details or specifications.

As suggested by the interviewer, Apple’s iPhone might have contributed to the popularity of Web-enabled cell phones nowadays. Statistics from PriceGrabber.com showed that number of online consumers buying their first Web-enabled handset in 2007 had greatly jumped by 75% compared to the year before. So the release of iPhone in 2007 might somehow triggered off the wide adoption of smartphones.

When shopping online with your smart device, some suitable cell phone accessories may help enhancing your shopping experience. For example, a stylus can offer greater accuracy and faster typing, while a spare cell phone battery or charger can power up your device, so you can enjoy online shopping anytime at anywhere.
