Verizon Palm Centro – Makes Smartphones More Affordable
As one of the affordable 3G-capable smartphones on Verizon’s lineup, Palm Centro (690) has always been a popular handset, which offers an easy-to-use experience with the intuitive Palm OS. It has also attracted customers by fitting a nice array of productivity and communication features in a small package.
Centro measures a dimension of 4.22" x 2.11" x 0.73" (H x W x D), making it a small and sleek device. Thanks to its curved shape and lightweight design at 4.2 ounces, Centro is easy to hold in hands, and it also fits well in pockets.
Coming in an attractive and classy cobalt blue color, Centro features a 2.25" responsive touchscreen at 320x320-pixel resolution. Just as other Palm handsets, Centro also sports a QWERTY keypad. The keys are rather tiny, but they provide tactile feedback, while the rubber-like coating also helps you stay just on the key.
Turning to the software part, the smartphone offers various email solutions to keep the user connected. The VersaMail app has built-in support for Microsoft’s Direct Push Technology, which enables real-time sync with Microsoft Exchange. Centro also supports POP and IMAP email accounts, including AOL, Gmail and Yahoo Plus. However, the handset does not come with any instant messaging clients.
Besides handling emails, Centro can also assist you in dealing with documents. With the DataViz's Documents to Go 10 Suite, users can view, create and edit Microsoft Office files on the device anytime. Address book and calendar apps are also clear and easy to manage. Moreover, Centro syncs information well with both PCs and Macs.
Though Centro lacks Wi-fi connectivity, it has EV-DO that supports broadband-like speeds that offer fast and smooth Web browsing, data transfer and music streaming. The device also offers memory expansion up to 4GB using a MicroSD card, so you can take your tunes everywhere you go.
Other features on Centro include a 1.3-megapixel camera and camcorder, a built-in MP3 player, and integrated Bluetooth profiles for wireless headset, hands-free kits and serial port. However, stereo Bluetooth headset cannot be used since there is no A2DP support.
Verizon Palm Centro is no doubt an attractive smartphone, especially for those on a budget, as it displays a perfect combination of a well-designed user interface, a slim and sleek form factor and most of all, solid performance. It is also a capable "first smartphone" for first-time buyers, since the handset is easy to use and affordable.
