Pantech Matrix Pro (C820) – the Dual-sliding Smartphone from AT&T

Released for AT&T, the Pantech Matrix Pro (C820) is a Windows Mobile 6.0 smartphone that boasts a dual-sliding double keyboard design. As the successor to the original Matrix, the Matrix Pro offers a more vivid screen, upgraded camera, faster processor and solid feature set.

Like many other Pantech handsets, the Matrix Pro features the company’s unique double-sliding form factor, which reveals the 12-key numeric pad when slid vertically and reveals the full QWERTY keyboard when slid sideways. It feels appropriate in the hand at 4.3 ounces and remains portable by measuring 4.17 by 2.0 by 0.85 inches. The handset’s 2.4-inch screen is not touch-sensitive, but delivers good imagery with support for 260,000 colors and 240x320-pixel resolution.

Powered by the Windows Mobile operating system, the Matrix Pro sports with a wealth of productivity features. The preloaded Office Mobile suite contains Excel, OneNote, Powerpoint and Word Mobile for you to create and edit different types of documents. You can view PDF files using Jetcet PDF. The Internet Explorer Mobile 6 with Flash Lite upgrade allows you to surf the Internet rapidly over AT&T’s 3G network.

Besides, there are plenty of email and messaging choices on the Matrix Pro. The phone offers instant messaging using AOL, Windows Live Messenger and Yahoo Messenger. Its Microsoft Direct Push lets you sync your corporate email, contacts, calendar and more. It is also compatible with personal email accounts like Yahoo Mail, AOL, Windows Live Hotmail and Comcast. Text messaging in threaded style and multimedia messaging are onboard as well.

In addition, the Matrix Pro boasts a broad selection of AT&T’s multimedia services. Other than the basics such as AT&T’s Cellular Video, MobiTV, and AT&T Video Share for live streaming video communications, you also get music-related programs like XM Radio Mobile and Music ID. It comes equipped with Windows Media Player for playing music files like MP3, WMA and AAC, as well as video files like MPEG4 and WMV. You can purchase more over-the-air from Napster Mobile and eMusic Mobile. On top of that, the carrier offers AT&T Navigator, a location-based application for turn-by-turn directions.

Apart from the aforementioned, you will find other features like world roaming, Bluetooth 2.0, speakerphone, voice commands and voice dialing. There is also a 2.0-megapixel camera/camcorder with 4x digital zoom and multi-shot mode. The phone comes with 256MB ROM and 128MB RAM, but also sports with a microSD card slot for up to 32GB expandable memory.

Despite its lack of Wi-Fi and 3.5mm standard jack, the Pantech Matrix Pro is still a decent smartphone with balanced business and multimedia features. This is a device that dual-slider lovers won’t want to miss.
