Consumer Satisfaction Survey: Verizon Ranks Best; Sprint, AT&T Last

Despite the fact that 88 percent of Americans own a cell phone, not many of them are really happy with the cell phone services they receive. According to Consumer Reports’ latest cell phone survey, two-thirds of respondents said they had at least one major complaint with their wireless carriers, and only 54 percent were completely or very satisfied.

The consumer advocacy group asked more than 50,000 wireless customers living in 26 U.S. cities, and found that Verizon came out on top among the major U.S. cell phone carriers. Although one out of five respondents complained about its high prices, the company scored the highest in customer support, voice and data service.

Following behind Verizon was T-Mobile, which was considered a "good value" for some users. The carrier did particularly good in providing quality customer support, but received low marks in voice, messaging, web and email services.

Sprint and AT&T share the title of this year’s worst carrier as they both got below-average marks on every aspect except Web surfing and texting. Sprint’s weakest spot lay in customer service, with its issue resolving ability rated as the worst. For AT&T, it scored particularly poorly on voice connectivity.

In the meantime, Apple’s iPhone 3G S is rated as the best smartphone in the industry, showing a sharp contrast to its exclusive carrier, AT&T. The smartphone gained high marks for its touchscreen display, navigation capabilities, web browsing, multimedia features as well as battery life. Also, the report found that 98 percent of surveyed iPhone users were satisfied enough that they would stick with AT&T in spite of its poor performance.

Other smartphones receiving good comments include the Nokia N97 for AT&T, the T-Mobile myTouch, the HTC Touch Pro2 for Verizon, the HTC Imagio for Verizon and the Samsung Omnia for Verizon.

Considering the low ratings AT&T got on its voice service, it would be wise for the carrier to work harder on improving its network, or else it will lose many customers once the exclusive contract with Apple is over.
