Rising Demand for Smartphone Security

While smartphones with increasingly advanced capabilities continue to improve user experience, they also pose higher risks of mobile virus, spyware and other malware. With more companies developing security software and services to tackle this problem, the smartphone security market is set to boom in the next five years, according to ABI Research.

The analyst firm has recently released a study regarding the market for mobile device security. The number of smartphones equipped with advanced virus protection and security software is expected to surge fivefold by the end of 2014. In 2009 alone, the revenue generated by mobile security solutions has already jumped by 40%.

The projected rapid growth is driven by two main factors: strong enterprise demand and regulatory requirements. As smartphones, especially those corporate oriented BlackBerry devices, are increasingly used to store sensitive business data, enterprises with mobile workforces are looking to mobile device management services to prevent the theft or loss of important information to malware. On the other hand, organizations that deal with sensitive personal and financial information have to comply with certain regulatory requirements, such as HIPAA, GISRA, and SEC for data protection.

Currently, mobile security services are not hard to find. They allow users to remotely lock a handset, erase and backup its data, or locate it. Apple’s iPhone, for example, includes the Find My iPhone feature, which helps to recover a lost iPhone or remotely wipe the personal data on it.

In addition, fingerprint sensors will emerge as a growing feature in handsets for mobile banking, person-to-person payments and navigation. This technology is already highlighted in some devices, like the LG eXpo, which is embedded with fingerprint navigation sensors. ABI Research also predicts that more future mobile devices will be preloaded with anti-virus software clients.

Of course, the best way to prevent mobile malware is to avoid putting sensitive data on your phone, no matter you own a smartphone or a feature phone. Meanwhile, you have to be careful about leaving your handset behind or lending it to a stranger. A leather case with belt clip may also help to keep your handset close to you.
