Nokia Debuts Eco-friendly Cell Phone Charger Powered by Bicycle
In an effort to go green, handset giant Nokia has recently developed a new cell phone accessory that allows you to juice up your phone battery by riding a bicycle.
Targeting developing countries where power supply is unreliable and expensive, the Nokia Bicycle Charger Kit consists of a charger, a dynamo and a holder that mounts your phone to the handlebars of your bike. When you start to cycle, the dynamo will generate electricity from the movement of the wheels, providing a free and environmentally friendly source of energy to charge your mobile device.
To provide sufficient energy for effective charging, the bike rider will have to cycle at a speed of at least 6 kilometers per hour. The kit will continue to charge up to 50km per hour - the equivalent of a normal charger. Riding at 10km per hour for 10 minutes will provide enough power for about 28 minutes of talk time or 37 hours of standby time. But of course, charging time will vary depending on the phone model.
According to Nokia, the charger kit is suitable for plugging into any Nokia cell phone with a standard 2mm power connector, including the 5310 XpressMusic, the E61 and the E71x.
The cell phone maker is planning to roll out the accessory before the end of this year in its own retail stores and selected retailers at the price of $18 for each. Although the kit will be initially aimed at emerging markets with limited access to electricity, the company also sees potential in other countries around the world.
