Samsung Galaxy Ace 2 (GT-i8160) – A Wonderful Device at A Reasonable Price
Riding the success of the original Samsung Galaxy Ace, the Korean phone maker has released a decent follow-up—Samsung Galaxy Ace 2 (GT-i8160)—that retains some of the original’s much-appreciated features, while bumping up a number of specs to make it a reassuring handset for the low- to mid-range market.
The first thing you will notice on the Galaxy Ace 2 is its 3.8-inch Super PLS LCD screen with 480x800-pixel resolution, up from the previous 3.5-inch screen with only 320x480-pixel resolution. Despite the now larger screen display, the Galaxy Ace 2 has slimmed down by 1mm to measuring 10.5mm thick, and weighs fairly light at 122g. The phone sports an unassuming yet solid design—a slightly textured back with round corners—which is commonly found on a lot of Samsung’s recent Android-powered devices.
Some might be disappointed that the new Ace does not come with the latest version of Google’s OS, but the combination of Android 2.3 Gingerbread and Samsung’s own TouchWiz 4.0 interface still offers a smooth and intuitive user experience. To further improve its performance, the Galaxy Ace 2 is now equipped with an 800MHz dual-core processor and 768MB of RAM, an obvious improvement over the single-core processor and 278MB of RAM of the original Ace. You also get an abundance of connectivity options like Wi-Fi, A-GPS, HSDPA, DLNA and Bluetooth.
People looking forward to communication and multimedia features won’t be let down either. The phone hosts a wide spectrum of messaging and email options. On the back of the device, you will find a 5-megapixel camera that can be used to shoot 720p HD video at an impressive 30-frames-per-second. You can play the recorded clips with the integrated video player, which also handles other file types including DivX and Xvid. In additions, there are a VGA front-facing camera for video chats, a built-in TouchWiz music player for playing audio in various formats, and a 3.5mm jack that is compatible with your own pair of standard earphones. You can save all your files in the 4GB of internal storage, or additional storage via an up-to-32GB microSD card.
What’s more, the smartphone comes with Swype, Android’s stock browser, Adobe Flash and YouTube pre-installed. And thanks to the search giant’s iconic Google Play store, finding more apps to enhance your smartphone experience is just a few clicks away.
The Samsung Galaxy Ace 2 (GT-i8160) is no hardware monster or groundbreaking powerhouse, but it continues and betters its predecessor’s role as a decent near-budget alternative, which will appeal to those who are picking their first smartphone or pay-as-you-go mobile.
