Apple and Android Devices Tops Relative Usage of Mobile Web Sites

Mobile advertising agency AdMob found that smartphones accounted for almost 3 times more mobile web usage than their relative market shares, while the relative usage of mobile web sites and HTML sites are the highest on Apple and Android devices.

AdMob has released its April 2009 Mobile Metrics Report, comparing the market share of smartphones by different operating systems to the market share of mobile web usage.

Previously estimated by research firm Gartner, global smartphone sales represented around 12% of the total units of handset sold in 2008. However, as stated in AdMob’s April report, 35% of its worldwide ad requests during the month came from smartphones, which almost tripled the estimated size of market share it took.

The strongest relative usage of both mobile web and HTML web sites was seen on iPhone and Android devices, according to AdMob’s report. The iPhone OS occupied 8% of the smartphone market, but generated 43% of mobile web requests and 65% of HTML usage. The Android OS, though taking less than 1% of the market share, has also generated 3% of mobile web requests and 9% of HTML usage.

On the contrary, the performance of the Symbian OS has been slightly disappointing. As a big player, it took more than half of the smartphone market at 52%. However, it has only brought 36% of mobile web usage and 7% of HTML.

AdMob’s report also found 24% of requests made over a Wi-Fi network in April 2009. The top five Wi-Fi-enabled devices in terms of mobile web usage were the iPhone , iPod touch , Sony PlayStation Portable (PSP), HTC G1 (Google Phone) and HTC Dash.
