iPhone & iPodTouch: the Environmental-Friendly Work Tool
Recently, Chalmers of Volvo Group is looking into using iPhone or iPodTouch as the new work tool of assembly system operators. By attaching the smart device to the protective clothing, operators can then stay online and obtain information needed anytime.
In automobile assembly plants, operators have to handle countless pieces of paper instructions every day, since there is a huge variety of vehicle models. Thousands of pages are hence printed each day at numerous assembly plants around the globe. However, it’s time to be more environmental-friendly. By applying the new work tool, instructions can be sent through or read on an iPhone or iPodTouch, saving huge amount of papers each day.
Another concern is that it is difficult for the operators to handle paper instructions, or check the information on computer screens all the time, when they perform assembly operations. But with the convenient "wearable" work tool, they can obtain information they need anytime at anywhere, simply by using the attached smart device.
The working environment, as a whole, will be enhanced with the new iPhone or iPodTouch -based work tool. Not only that the operators can receive clearer and more updated instructions, they can also focus more on their tasks instead of moving around and spending time to look for information they need. Customers’ requests like product changes can be handled more easily and efficiently as well.
Therefore, if this next-generation work tool can be implemented on a broad scale, both environmental and social sustainability will be greatly increased. Production efficiency and productivity gains can also be achieved.

This highly usable work tool was developed by Professor Johan Stahre, the leader of Chalmers' manufacturing research effort in a pan-European research project MyCar, together with partners from Volvo Technology and the University of Skövde.
The concept prototypes of the new iPhone or iPodTouch -based work tool are now being tested at the Volvo Trucks pilot assembly plants. However, it will probably take some time before the innovative concept can be fully realized.
